Programme on Lending Strategies to MSEs (Focus: BMs of SME Branches)

The MSE sector is being increasingly viewed as the engine for sustained economic growth. From banks perspective this segment is the one which offers huge business potential at a relatively higher margin. Apart from enacting MSMED Act in 2006 to provide a policy framework for the promotion, in the recent months the Government/RBI have taken several steps to improve the flow of credit to this sector. Apart from advising banks to earmark 60 per cent of the total MSE advances to "micro-enterprises" and ensuring an annual growth of 20 per cent in MSE credit, RBI has once again emphasized in the recent monetary policy that those banks lagging behind in this respect must prepare time-bound action plan to achieve these targets. Given this perspective, banks must embark upon an appropriate MSE lending strategy with due consideration on business-segments, risk assessment, credit delivery, loan relationship, monitoring and supervision, debt restructuring and rehabilitation support and NPA management. Needless to mention, the branch managers, particularly of MSME branches need to be sensitized to enable them to develop branch level strategies in tune with the corporate policy. It is against this backdrop that the captioned programme is being organized at NIBM.
